These Latin letters are meant to mirror the Bengali alphabet, with a distinct Latin character for every Bengali one, to stay true to Bengali spelling. Secondly, the romanizations in this post do not entirely adhere to how you think they should be pronounced! For example, য is romanized as ‘y’ but is pronounced like ‘j’. But the thing is, these aren’t the only characters! There are diacritic forms of vowels and a few consonants, diacritical markings, and eventually, when we get comfortable with the alphabet, I will post about conjunct characters, which are entirely new characters that represent new sounds/spellings when you combine the characters on this list. Notes: Firstly, yes that’s a lot of characters! But that makes this alphabet more straightforward in pronunciation than English, which has probably 10x more combinations, rules, and exceptions for how letters represent sounds. The following is the Bengali alphabet in alphabetical order (which is super useful when you’re trying to use the dictionary!):įormat: bengali character | romanization (via Hanne-Ruth Thompson)
